To make matters worse my gel polish did not last long. It hung in there for merely eight days before it started to flap off. I wrote about my findings and noted that gel nails were not all they were cracked up to be. But, I was wrong. It turns out that not all gel manicures are created equal. You have to search for a good nail technician and I have found the holy mecca of nail bars - The Make-Up, Nail and Skin Studio in Hataitai.
So after a manic morning of organising little people, I set off to The Make-Up Nail and Skin Studio. I must say that this place is a girly-girl's paradise! Everywhere I looked there was something beautiful to catch my eye. Handbags. Jewellery. Designer dresses on display. And the largest colour selection of gel nail polish I have ever seen! Whatever your colour desire is, they have it!
I was introduced to Shakira, my new nail artist (and a true creative genius) and she asked me what I had in mind for my manicure. I was a little nervous. Usually my tastes are little way-out for some and enough to make a lot of suburban mothers wince, but when I told Shakira I was thinking of pink and purple glitter leopard print, she didn't even flinch. She just smiled and asked "What colour glitter were you thinking of?" That's when she directed me to the glitter wall. Yes! Glitter wall! A selection of glitters so large it almost made me squeal. It was at that point that I decided I was in heaven.
The truth is my finished nails were so freaking beautiful that I was slightly concerned that I would end up like Narcissus. Though instead of spending my life gazing at my own reflection like he, I would whittle away my life gazing at my beautiful nails. But you know what, you've gotta take what beauty you can get in this world!
Shakira is such a pro that while I was at NZFW I had about a billion people asking me who did my nails and whether they were press ons (because the pattern looked so flawless). When I told them they were done by hand they were even more impressed. And the best thing was that my nails did not chip once! Not at all. Three weeks on they are still going strong! Though as one of my super powers is very fast growing nails they have started growing out a little, but to be honest I am kinda ready for a change up. I'm thinking this time maybe fluro pink with a shimmery sheen and a gold feature nail?
