I couldn't figure out why my hands kept flying up over my eyes and why I had a huge knot in my stomach. Then it dawned on me. This film was so close to home for me that watching it was a kin to that cringey feeling you get when reading your old diary or seeing old film footage of yourself. I felt like I was watching myself.
Juno Temple is absolutely amazing as Lily. A young girl bent on self destruction and curious to a fault. Precocious Lily is desperate to leave the small Californian town of Salton Sea. Assuming that there is actually something better out there away from her disappointing family. Alison, Lily's younger but wiser friend, is more content with her lot but in a bid to watch out for her reckless friend plays into her demands.
Little Birds is a film that sticks with you. Not hauntingly, but it's there in your mind like an embarrassing memory from your foolish youth.
