I love it. Why? Because it makes me feel strong. I can feel muscles in new places helping me do basic things; like pick up my kids, clean out the chicken coop and lunge forward from a downward dog.
Strength training is good for everyone. As we age, we start to lose muscle and bone strength and become more wobbly on our feet as a result. We’re also more likely to fall prey to old age ailments like arthritis and heart disease. But by including some basic body weight training into your workout routine it is possible to prevent these health problems from occurring. It has also been shown to make you look awesome.
Strength training doesn’t have to mean weights either. It is amazing what a difference, press ups, squats, lunges and planking can do when performed properly – with the assistance of a personal trainer or health professional.
My trainer has tailor made a workout for me that includes a clever combination of cardio and strength. I love it. It takes just over 30 minutes a day (performed three days a week) and it kicks my ass. I feel amazing just after I’ve finished, but by the end of the day – and the next morning I am feeling it.
When it comes to exercise, sometimes no matter how much protein you eat, or how many complex carbs you cram into yourself pre or post workout, you still feel exhausted. That’s why I decided to find me a good supplement to prevent burn out. There’s nothing worse than waking up the morning after a good workout and feeling like you’ve been hit by a bus.
It’s great to feel that you’ve worked hard the day before. But when you are too shattered to even entertain the idea of a hard cardio session it’s just no fun!
I scoured the internet looking for the best supplement for my needs and settled on a BCAA (branched chain amino acid) powder with a ratio of appropriate amino acids of 2:1:1. There are literally hundreds of these things on the market. All boasting their ability to reduce fatigue and muscle loss. But when I looked at the ingredients I was flabbergasted. They were all full of rubbish; Artificial sweeteners, sugar, colouring, preservatives. Weird stuff I couldn’t pronounce.
I didn’t like it.
I make it my mission to eat as cleanly as possible and I make no exceptions when it comes to supplements. I wouldn’t eat sugar and colouring normally. Why would I drink it in a “health supplement”? It made no sense.
That’s when I did even more googling and discovered Reactiv Supplements. Not surprisingly a New Zealand based company that specialise in pure, natural, supplements. After a vegan protein powder? They’ve got you covered. Want one that’s paleo friendly? They do that too. These products are a processed as little as possible. Just basic, pure actives. Awesome.
I add my BCAA powder into my morning green juice pre-working out. Then I throw more into my protein smoothie post work out. So far I have noticed a huge increase in my performance and recovery without the drop from a sugary supplement or the head spin that comes from artificial sweeteners. I love it! Now I don't dread waking up the morning after a good hard workout. I may wake up feeling like I've worked hard but I no longer feel like I need the morning in bed to regain my energy levels.
