Not only are her pieces hand made in NZ, but they're also quirky, cute and colourful. We caught up with Tania to pick her brain about her awesome jewellery collection.
I am a Capricorn so in true Capricorn fashion I'm stubborn but also creative.
What is your favourite colour?
It changes all the time. At the moment I am into lilac and burgundy, Last month is was mustard and teal.
Cat or dog person?
I am a cat person all the way. I do love dogs but anyone who knows me knows I'm about 20 cats shy of a crazy cat lady (I currently have just the 1).
What was the last book you read?
I just finished 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower' by Stephen Chbosky. This was the February book selected by a book club I recently joined. I liked it although it was a little young for me. My favourite line from the book is a poignant reflection on growing up:
"We were too young to know that the bus driver didn't care about our song. That all he wanted to do was go home after work. And maybe sleep off the drinks he had at lunch." Metaphorically speaking I am now the bus driver.
Favourite ice cream flavour?
Neapolitan hands down (3 flavours in one? ummmm YES!) closely followed by cookies and cream.
What’s the worst movie you ever saw? And the best?
The worst movie was probably something like step up to the streets 5 *enter any number here* I love movies that are about singing and dancing but I cringe through the acting scenes and poorly shaped love stories. My favourite movie of all time is Cry Baby featuring the amazing Johnny Depp and Ricki Lake among others. If you haven't seen it then add it to your must see list now. To be honest, Mean Girls is pretty bangin also
And because this is a girly blog what is your favourite shade of lipstick at the moment?
At the moment I have an amazing watermelon colour and also a deep burgundy. I want to invest next in a Lorde-esk dark purple.
I have been experimenting with different materials since the middle of last year but I began working towards actually making a range in about November of last year.
Fortune and Blame is great name! Brings to mind beautiful but tragic imagery. How did you come up with it?
Fortune and Blame began as a play on words to "fortune and fame" but you are exactly right, as soon as the name was formed in my head it exuded this dark yet playful attitude which directly reflects the aesthetic of the jewellery range
What is your jewellery made out of?
Almost all of the pieces are made out of resin and are all coloured or filled with wonderful things. Some include candy pieces and odd things I've found on my crafting forages. I'm forever collecting new bits that I can utilize in my jewellery
Can you tell us a bit about the making process?
Making a piece of resin art involves pouring resin either into a mould or cavity. I then experiment with different colours and textures to fill the resin before it hardens into a plastic like substance. I then hand sculpt and gloss all of the pieces
The range was originally based around tattoo culture as I guess that's the sort of aesthetic that goes hand in hand with people who love and get tattoos. That's not to say that someone who doesn't have any tattoos can't rock a piece of the jewellery. The range has grown into a mix of cultures so there is a piece to suit everybody.
Do you still have a day job? Or are you a full time maker?
Oh to be able to live off my passion! Yes, I still have a full time job. It’s really nice to have something creative to come home to. When I've had a hard day at work I just think about the fact that I am the creator of Fortune and Blame and it motivates me to push on
So what else do you do to nurture your creative side?
I dabble in sewing. And when I say dabble I mean I spend a lot of money on fabrics that sit in my fabric drawer for months before I get around to doing anything with them. One of my 2014 new year’s resolutions is to sew more. I also sing and am learning the guitar to be able to accompany myself (that sounds so lonely!).
I have a store on Storenvy.com and I'm also on Facebook and Instagram
What are working on at the moment?
Aside from always trying out new pieces and seeing what works and what doesn't...I've just added some new pieces to the store including a vintage pug dog in an ornate black frame, an 80's troll head, black and ginger moustaches and a fun flamingo in a jar.
"Milk and cookies"
