Fat Dennis and Toby are animals. But I'm an animal too right? You're an animal. A mammal to be precise. So as humans, are we doing too much? Should we be focusing on the daily tasks of washing, eating, playing and sleeping?
Exhaustion and stress are real things. They can even kill. Are we, as humans, just too busy? Do we need to take it down a notch? Take time to smell the roses? Get up in the morning, have a little play, have a little food, take another nap, get up and see a friend that lives less than five metres away then take another nap before some more food. I feel I would be much, much happier if my life was like that (okay I admit - some days it is although my friend Lavinia does live all the way round the block so it's a bit further than five metres away) .
We're even teaching our kids to be crazy busy.
"Get up! It's seven thirty!"
"But I'm still sleepy because I'm growing."
"Don't care. Get up and go to school. Then after you spend a full day in that incredibly busy, noisy place you can go and play sport for an hour then have your piano lesson."
"When can I play?"
"I'll pencil it in for six-thirty tonight."
Sometimes I just need things to slow down. I get overwhelmed. There's too much going on and too many things to do. And by the way, I feel I've been tricked. Wasn't technology supposed to make my life easier? It isn't. I keep having to charge up my phone and fill my car up with petrol and I don't even know how the fuck to turn my TV on with its seventeen remotes.
I am too busy to even write this article. I've got fifty things on my to do list. Did you know there's a sale on at Briscoes? I've gotta go real soon.
But before I do. We need to change our mindests. Time is not money. Time is more precious than money. We need to take it back. Take it back for a bath and a play and time with our kids. We need to steal our time. It's ours. It was ours and it can be again.
