That year, when I turned 11, my mother gave me two large crystals. One was rose quartz. It was flat and shaped like a rugged heart and interestingly it looked a lot like my blob of glue. The second was a chunk of amethyst. It was bigger and chunkier than the rose quartz and fit nicely in my hand. Conveniently, my blob of glue disappeared.
I loved my crystals. They were precious. I'd hold them when I was sad to cheer me up. I'd take them to school in my pocket if I needed some extra luck and I'd even sleep with them tucked up next to me.
I still have my two crystal buddies, though they are not quite as dear to me as they once were. They are meant to live on my bedside cabinet but regularly, little fingers find them and take them for a stroll. I always find them again, usually in odd places, like the fridge. I don't blame my boys for hijacking them though. I mean they are pretty gorgeous.
Sadly the spot where Christopher's used to be is now occupied by some other establishment. A cafe? A bar? Whatever it is, it does not sell crystals. This seems to be the case for most crystal shops of the 90s. They are gone. The profits from selling crystals does not make a dent in the retail rent prices in the larger cities. Possibly because of people like me, who used to look and never buy.
But now that I am older and slightly richer, I really want to go ogle some crystals and maybe even buy them. But where to go? Are there any crystal shops anywhere? The answer is yes! While perusing my helpful local rag, I discovered an article about a new crystal shop that had opened not far from me. Healing Light Crystals opened recently in Tawa. They stock all kinds of gorgeous crystals, tarot cards, healing wands, jewellery and candle lamps.
I wandered in to the store on a rare and somewhat alien child free day. Originally I had my heart set on a pretty pendant or a smaller piece of amethyst for under my pillow but I ended up falling in love with something else entirely.
Crystals are funny. I believe that they choose us, not the other way around. Yeah okay, that may sound a little kooky but after my experience that day I truly believe it!
There I was looking for amethyst when something else caught my eye. A small stone that glinted at me. I picked up the tiny oval and looked at it. At first inspection it seemed rather plain. A pale creamy pebble, tinted the colour of soapy water, slightly purple. But then the light hit it. The whole little stone lit up bright golden, as if there was sunlight trapped inside it. It was amazing. I held the small stone in my palm and it just felt right. As if she had felt the connection too the woman behind the counter looked at me and smiled. "That opalite is lovely isn't it" she said. Aha! Opalite. So that's what you are, I thought as I looked down at it in my hand. "Yes it is" I replied. "I think it's chosen me" I said. Then I laughed because it sounded so kooky. But the woman just smiled "They do that" she said. I instantly felt less kooky.
You may think it is all hocus pocus as I have done too, but crystals have been used for years to assist with health. It could be a placebo effect but some do claim they help. And if it works, it works I say! One thing is for sure, when I'm having a bad day, I just place my opalite in my palm and watch the sunlight dancing inside it and pretty soon I'm feeling better!
Check out this guide below to crystal healing. Once you've found the crystal for you keep it close. You could get yourself a pretty crystal pendant that you can where around your neck and press into your palm when you need courage. Or you could go for a simple stone that you can hold in your hand or place under your pillow at night. And hey you can always do both!
