You see, I used to smoke but I haven't for aaaaages and then I realised - Carrie smokes! She smokes all the way through season one and two and I'm pretty sure I remember her smoking in Season 6 in Paris too. Did smoking really used to be cool? It seems crazy now because smokers are basically evil and cigarettes represent death. But God, I used to love to smoke. It was one of my favourite things to do. I liked taking deep breaths in and long breaths out and I was young so I didn't care that I was breathing in tar and poison because I thought I would live forever.
It seems a more innocent age - before we knew how bad smoking was. My friends and I would sit in the James Smith Cafe in Wellington wearing petticoats and Doc Boots and smoke cigarettes and drink coke (btw that's bad for you too) and we just didn't care. We didn't care that smoking could kill us. We didn't care that Coca Cola is horrendously fattening. We didn't care that old man pants didn't really go with petticoats. We just laughed and smoked and laughed some more.
I know smoking isn't cool. I know that I'm happy I quit. I know that smoking is bad. But every now and then, I still miss it. I suppose once you have been really, truly, madly addicted to something then a part of you will always miss it. I'm glad I quit while I was ahead. I'm glad I was never an old smoker. And a part of me will always be the fourteen year old girl wearing a uniform blowing smoke rings in the girls toilets at high school (shock me, shock me, shock me with your devious behavior!)
So here's to bad habits and finally kicking them (even if you still miss them sometimes)!
