It has now been (only) two weeks since I started the challenge and already I am struggling. I think the glow started to wear off on Friday when after a fabulous High Tea at Sweetpea in Petone, I suggested to my Mother that we go and check out Rebound Clothing.
The first mistake was that we decided to walk there! What a walk it was! In uncomfortable (though fabulous) shoes. After developing many blisters and getting on a good sweat in my High Tea frock, we finally made it! We entered a giant warehouse full of preloved clothing! Wowee! I thought. This will be a goldmine! How wrong I was. I'm not sure why but after an hour of RUMMAGING we both wandered out empty handed and exhausted!
The problem was I think that as well as there just being far too much to trawl through, the items that were OK were not worth the marked price. I found a cute dress. But, it needed a belt to really sell it and a petticoat underneath. It was marked at $25.00. Twenty five bucks! Are you kidding me? After I walked all this way?! Why so expensive you ask? Vintage. Yep, it was made in the 60s so they get to charge too much. Call me stingy but I think $25.00 is too much to pay for a dress that for all I know could have been farted in 500 times.
There was a rack of 'labelled' dresses, meaning anything from Trelise Cooper to Portmans. And these items were definitely priced like labelled clothes! I saw a few cool things but once again the price let them down. And sometimes the quality wasn't even that great! I must have pulled out at least 10 items that were ripped or damaged. At least at places like Paperbag Princess and Recycle Clothing where the items are at similar prices, the quality is excellent.
After an hour of painstakingly flicking through a giant warehouse full of musty, smelly clothes, sneezing, squinting my eyes to envisage if each item "worked", then trying on a mountain of "potentials" only to come out with NOTHING! That was it. That was the point when I began to lose faith in op-shopping.
Thing is I really couldn't understand why Rebound Clothing was such a a dud. When I walked in it seemed so promising. Maybe it was just too much stuff. Maybe it was just too big. Unless you have a good few hours, have taken a multi vitamin with breakfast, and are really ready to rumble it might just be a but overwhelming? Perhaps there were some gems hidden in there somewhere, needle in haystack style, but good golly you'd have to really love the hunt. And as it turns out I maybe don't so much.
From now on I intend to stick to the smaller op-shops. The places that filter through the junk and sell only the good stuff. Then at least it's 'Get in-Get out.' A quick 5-10 minutes and you've cased the joint for goodies. Then you're out empty handed or you're out with a score. Either way you haven't wasted too much of your time.
Two months, two weeks to go. Pray for me.
