That’s when I came across the video in which a young unassuming girl took a seat next to Pharrell Williams and began to talk about her music. First her move away from making the traditional folk music she had previously embraced, leading her on a musical hiatus across Europe. Then her discovery of dance music which brought with it the rebirth of her relationship with music.
As she speaks we can hear that this thing that she does is part of her. The music she makes is flowing through her veins. She makes music because she has to. It is like air and water. She lives to make music and makes music to live.
But when I heard her song Alaska, I was as amazed and awed as Pharrell himself.
This. Song. Is. Brilliant.
I can make no comparisons to anyone even though I feel a like someone will eventually compare her to Lorde.
Maggie Rogers is refreshing. She doesn’t play like a Kardashian on camera. Nor does she dress like one. She simply is Maggie Rogers. A Poet. A singer. A songwriter. And a maker of extraordinary music.
