Supposedly it is a huge deal to have Roxi D'lite in the land of the long white cloud. She is big in the burlesque world and the 2010 winner of 'Miss Exotic World.' Roxi D'lite is lovely. She is tiny, beautiful, bubbly and she is THIRTY - which made us love her even more. She also does photography in her spare time and you can see some of her work here. After the show, we watched Burlesque Assassins - a movie starring Roxi D'Lite!
Burlesque Assassins is a hilarious movie! Three sexy Burlesque dancers set out to murder Hitler, Mussolini and Stalin - it actually seemed quite plausible! Why did no one think of this at the time?
The crowd was great fun. Dressed to impress and ready to have a good time while watching the burlesque dancers and the movie. There was only one weirdo in the audience with a David Bain jumper but I know he enjoyed the show because he had his napkin strategically placed over his lap for the whole time!
You don't have to be a certain size or body type to try burlesque. The Miss Burlesque websites states : "Although the event has parallels with beauty pageants, contestants within Miss Burlesque NZ are judged on skill, not looks. Women of all ages, sizes and cultures are celebrated" We like this about burlesque. Catherine says that if you want to give burlesque a go, find a good teacher. Find out what experience they have in burlesque. The more the better!
We had a great chat to the girls from 'The Harem Honey Burlesque Troupe' - Everything from how their boyfriends and dads felt about them doing burlesque to how they got into it. One member of the group had just come out of a bad relationship and had all this new found freedom. She wanted to do something new and different that she hadn't been able to do before and burlesque was the answer.
Catherine's advice: Don't judge yourself too harshly, be kind to other women, don't let men treat you like shit and set some ground rules.
On Saturday morning, it was definitely time to watch 'Burlesque' the movie - starring Cher and Christina Aguilera.
My favourite line:
"What is this? A Strip Club?"
"A strip club? Baby girl I should wash your mouth out with jagermeister"
We have a huge soft spot for Cher. She perfoms the song 'Welcome to Burlesque' with style.
"Show a little more,
Show a little less,
Add a little smoke,
Welcome to Burlesque,
Everything you dream of,
But never can possess,
Nothing's what it seems,
Welcome to Burlesque"
If you want a fun night out with the girls, we highly recommend a burlesque show. We found it empowering and it gave us a lot to think about. If you want to try burlesque, find a class near you!
