Sometimes when we are drowning, friendship can keep us afloat.
Shy Charlie quickly becomes a part of their small group of intelligent misfits, and slowly he lets down his guard and lets his personality shine. With his new friends, Charlie partakes in the usual teenage initiations of proms, parties, first kisses and mixtapes. But in the liberating process of finding himself he may uncover more than he expected.
The novel that inspired this film was published in 1999 and while this film is not blatantly set in any obvious year, there is definitely a very 90s feel about it. It is so refreshing to see a film void of social media. No texting, no facebook, no tweets! Yet, featuring typewriters, mixTAPES and real live books! It almost brings tears to my eyes! Ah the 90s! Who knew one day I would be so reminiscent of you?
What I really loved was the subtlety. It wasn't a film about the '90s'. it was a film about being a teenager that just happened to be in the 90s. But all the imagery was there. The feel was perfect. The story, timeless.
Not to mention the kick-ass soundtrack!
I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Recommended!
