Well hallelujah for The Soska Sisters! A Canadian twin duo putting the Grrrrrrrrrr in girl! Their first film 'Dead Hooker in a Trunk' got them noticed, now they're back with their feisty second feature American Mary.
Mary is a medical student, studying to be a surgeon. Times are tough and she is feeling it. She needs money STAT. So when the opportunity arises for Mary to make some extra dough doing what she does, she somewhat reluctantly, takes the offer. After this initial job Mary is unsure how she feels about what she has done, though more offers arise. What can she do? The money is good. But does doing this mean she is not?
That's when things turn. The old Mary sinks in deeper, making way for a new darker version. A vengeful, tough, fighter. Will the old Mary find her way back to the surface or is the new Mary here to stay?
Oddly, even though I am all about girls being just as tough as guys. I did at times find this film hard to watch. It was at some points just a little too vengeful for me. Don't get me wrong. I am all about revenge! The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo, for example was an excellently vengeful film (and book). I never ever once felt sorry for he whom Lisbeth Salander wreaked her vengeance upon. He deserved what he got. And them some. I wish I could say the same for this film. But I can't. For some reason my sympathies switched sides. I ended up feeling like Mary was indeed. "Bad." Which I'm not sure is a good thing. I would have liked if she could've come across as "Bad" but not cruel. Still likeable, like the characters in a Tarantino film, but I don't think she did by the end.
Very cool, twisted film. Worth a look.
