Potato chips or chocolate?
NEITHER - LOLLIES!
What was the last book you didn't finish?
THE WINNERS BIBLE - A FRIEND RECOMMENDED IT, BUT I INSTANTLY THOUGHT IT WAS RUBBISH :) THIS PROBABLY MEANS I'M EITHER ALREADY A WINNER, OR NEVER GOING TO BE ONE. I'LL GO FOR THE FIRST OPTION!
So you run the fantastic knitwear label Nineteen//46, what inspired the name?
NINETEEN//46 is the women's brand under it's parent company Silverdale Knitwear which was formed in 1946. This was the year that men came home from the war and many great NZ businesses were established simply because they didn't quite know what they were going to do.
How did Nineteen//46 come about?
THE SILVERDALE MEN'S KNITWEAR HAD ALWAYS BEEN STRONG, SO IT SEEMED LIKE A NATURAL PROGRESSION TO GROW THE WOMEN'S SIDE OF THE BUSINESS.
What is it that you love about knitwear?
COMFORT WOULD HAVE TO BE NUMBER ONE. MY PERSONAL STYLE IS ALWAYS ABOUT COMFORT, AND I THINK KNITWEAR AND COMFORT NATURALLY GO HAND IN HAND. KNITWEAR IS RELAXED AND LOVELY TO WEAR.
Have you always been interested/involved in fashion?
ALWAYS....I OWE THIS TO MY MOTHER. SHE WAS A NURSE BUT SHE LOVED FASHION AND USED TO MAKE ME REALLY COOL CLOTHES - SHE EVEN MADE MY SCHOOL UNIFORM IN THE 5TH FORM AND WHILE EVERYONE ELSE HAD THE USUAL SLEEVE, MINE WAS A CAPPED SLEEVE. AFTER SCHOOL I WENT IN TO FASHION RETAIL AND FROM THERE I HAVE WORKED AS A WINDOW DRESSER, SIGN WRITER, MODEL AGENT, FASHION SHOW DIRECTOR, FASHION SALES AGENT AND NOW IN DESIGN AND PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT.
What three words would you use to describe the style of Nineteen//46?
QUALITY. COMFORTABLE. CONTEMPORARY.
What's your advice for this years winter wardrobe?
WINTER? BE WARM AND COMFORTABLE AND STICK WITH YOUR OWN STYLE.
Is this your first time showing at Wellington Fashion Week? I'm really looking forward to your show. How are the preparations going?
THIS IS OUR FIRST TIME SHOWING AT WELLINGTON FASHION WEEK WHICH IS REALLY EXCITING. PREPARATIONS ARE GOING WELL....LIKE ANY SHOW THERE WILL BE THE LAST MINUTE STRESSES BUT I CAN'T WAIT TO HIT THE RUNWAY.
What else do you do to nurture your creative side?
I'M VERY LUCKY THAT I GET TO TRAVEL TO EUROPE EVERY OCTOBER TO SEE WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH KNITWEAR INTERNATIONALLY.
AND IT'S ALWAYS A CASE OF EYES AND EARS OPEN ON A DAY TO DAY BASIS.
TAKING TIME OUT HELPS. BEING STRESSED NEVER WORKS.
