Needless to say, we did not eat breakfast at The Langham. Instead we wandered out the back door and down City Street and onto Queen Street where we discovered our new favourite place to eat breakfast: Al's Deli. A cool retro little place that serves the best bagels in town!
On the first day we chose the toasted muesli which was divine! Mariana swooned over her delish latte that came in a jar and my Decafaccino was SUperb! But the next day was even better. I was, let's say a tad hungover after quite a wild crazy night at the Stolen Girlfriends Club show and after party. I was awoken at 6am (after a 12am lights out) by Mariana, whom sans fire-water is an obnoxiously early riser! I was not impressed or well.
After a good steaming in The Langham steam room and a swim in the pool we dressed and wandered down to Al's again for some hangover food. I discovered THE BEST hangover meal ever! One of Al's toasted sesame seed bagels served with bacon, cooked tomato and a tasty sausage! OMG! Yum. Mariana went for a toasted bagel with halloumi cheese. Also yum. After this meal my hangover was gone and it was time for us to head off to Huffer.
But, on our way out the door back past the counter we stopped. There next to the bagels were the WONUTS. What is a wonut you ask? Well, the wonut is a close relation of the Cronut (which Al's also do a very good job of) that hails from Chicago. Where the cronut is a croisant/donut the wonut is a waffle/donut. And the wonuts that really caught our eye were the maple bacon flavoured variety. That's right. They were drizzled with maple frosting and then covered with crispy pieces of bacon! So wrong but so very, very right.
Our new friend at the counter told us that currently Al's is the only place in NZ where you will find these delicious donut hybrids. So we figured, when in rome!
And BTW Al's Wonuts are amazing! Sweet and salty, crispy on the edges, chewy in the middle and delicious all the way through! If you live in Auckland go check 'em out for yourself!
