LPM: What inspires you in your day to day life?
SF: Our design is inspired by our social and cultural issues, our needs and wants of the moment, our environment and climate, whatever crazy pieces of art come our way, past styles we still love to bits and our beautiful fabrics and how we want them to feel on our body.....
LPM: Starfish came from pretty humble beginnings with Laurie Foon starting up her line with $133. Where do you see Starfish going in the next 10 years?
SF: I would like to see Starfish as being an iconic NZ label known for its success in starting an attitude or movement that considers a holistic approach to fashion design and production.
LPM: How would you describe the Starfish woman?
SF: The Starfish woman is her own person and wants her clothes to accentuate this. She is confident with whom she is and she is BUSY......Our clothes have got to work in many situations.
LPM: What are your favourite things about living in New Zealand?
SF: The camping, the swimming and the freedom. The mountains and the small population. The fact that I can cycle to work and get really good coffee.
LPM:We admire your sustainability goals. How hard is it to keep this up?
SF: I bit off a big one but I'm only interested for this reason.....there has got to be better ways and we are part of working out what that means.
LPM: Why New Zealand made?
SF: I have always believed that we have the skill to make things here...It always made sense to me to support this industry like a treasure...There are other designers coming after us and we want them to be able to access it too.
LPM: Give us the rundown on Fashion Week. How stressful/exciting/exhilarating is it?
SF: Haaaaah...even if you think you are an old hand at fashion weeks there are always curveballs......and always moments when you question what the hell you think you are doing......especially with a new collection, but it always comes together in the end!
LPM: What do you get out of Fashion Week?
SF: Apart from the chance to drink champagne, there is nothing like seeing the collection you can see in your head going down a catwalk.....it is like a symphony....the colors, the cuts, the music, the lights, the hair...the MOOD!!! And, I have never gotten married because every fashion week equals the same drama as marriage...believe me.....you just don't have to talk to your mother-in-law.
LPM: Top conversation starters for the opening party....
SF: Do you know what the fabrics you are wearing today are?
Do you know where they are made?
How many of your clothes did you throw into the bin last year unworn or worn hardly at all?
Which NZ designer label do you support?
LPM: Top three fashion tips for 2013...
SF: Keep it local and support a local designer or eco friendly label as much as possible.
Buy better garments so that over time you buy less.
Buy less polyester. It feels bad and it is not kind to the planet.
LPM: And, last but not least. The very most important question. I have a big bum. How should I dress it? Hide or flaunt?
SF: Get out there girlfriend! Boobs and Bums are our favourite things to flaunt!
Thanks Starfish! Watch this space for a rundown of their show at Wellington Fashion Week!
