It all started when I went to see natural healer and vaginal steaming practitioner Samar Ocean Wolf Ciprian. She pretty much enlightened me on how much the food we eat effects not only our bodies but our minds too. To have a calm mind, free of emotional turmoil, anger and tension, you need to first look at what you are doing to your body with food. As the ancient doctor's adage goes: Primum non nocere - First, do no harm.
I promptly went gluten free and then slowly reduced most sugar from my diet. But it didn’t stop there. I switched tap water for spring water (from the petone spring) and started focusing on consuming only whole, clean foods. If it didn’t have a mother, or grow in the ground, I would think twice about eating it. It didn’t come from a place of wanting to be thinner as it has in the past. It really was about living a clean simple life for my family and for the planet. There is no need for packaged food. We can all subsist without it.
My obsession progressed more and more. Now I only burn bees wax candles (I don’t like the idea of inhaling paraffin wax vapours) and I only use natural cleaning products, cosmetics and skincare as much as possible.
Tailor skincare is a Wellington based company founded by CEO Sara Quilter. Their products are truly natural. They are simple, clean and pure. There’s no long winded ingredients lists here. Just refreshing, nourishing skincare.
The three founding principles of Tailor Skincare are part of its appeal; Quality natural ingredients, consideration for the environment and a strict no animal testing policy. Tailor is my kind of skincare!
I was lucky enough to test out a few of the products; the popular masque, a set of minis for combination skin and the decadent Moisture.
However after a year of clean eating, I have found my skin is far less sensitive. I sued to react for no reason. Red, blotchy skin, psoriasis, eczema. I’ve had it all. Could it be that all this time it was dietary related? Quite possibly. (Check out the Tailor Skincare Blog for more articles on how lifestyle and diet can affect your skin).
I started with Tailor Oil Cleanse. A delicious, light nutty oil that cleanses without stripping the skin of natural oils. It felt light and decadent on my skin, not heavy or sticky at all and no strong odours. Just the pleasant aroma of hazelnut. After gently removing it with a warm face cloth my skin felt fresh and clean, not tight or tender.
Next up I tried the Dry Cleanse. A powder cleanser that you mix with a little water to create a paste. This stuff is amazing. It gently and subtly buffed my skin, leaving it feeling super smooth once I washed it off. It smelled subtly like some kind of pudding, but not overpowering, just nourishing and luxurious.
I am in love with Hydrate! This light hydrating gel formula didn't irritate my skin in the slightest. It left it feeling refreshed and quenched. A great product for skin that feels like it needs a dose of hydration.
I finished up with Moisture. A lavish moisturiser that left my skin feeling amazing. I have sensitive, dry combination skin so I need a product that penetrates without leaving my oily areas too oily. This does the trick. I am hooked!
On a quiet night in, when I was sure I wouldn’t be disturbed I tried out the Tailor Masque, made from bentonite clay. I tend to breakout before Shark Week, so this masque session was perfectly timed to prevent the usual collection of spots that appear in my hairline. This masque didn’t irritate my skin at all. Which is great considering the amount of times I’ve applied masques, only to run to the bathroom to remove them screaming “it burns! It burns!”
Tailor masque is amazing. Especially if you have oily skin, prone to breakouts or blackheads. Though if you have dry skin like me, it’s great too. I just kept my application to my T-zone – avoiding my very dry areas - and it was great.
Tailor skincare products are beautifully packaged treats that add a little bit of ritual to your daily skincare routine. Not only are they nourishing you, they are also nourishing the planet.
